Why the name Poá
The name
Poá comes from Old Tupi, the Tupi-Guarani language of coastal Brazil, where the root po means hand. Poá is the extended hand: the assistant that reaches out and does the work.
The mark
The mark is five raised strokes, an open hand lifted to speak. It reads three ways at once: a hand extended to help, a hand raised to be heard, and the five fingers of a day, each stroke the same but for the height it reaches.
